is in san jose this morning. people voted for this. >> reporter: people voted for this in november. what's happening today is minimum wage workers in san jose will now make $10 an hour. that's up from $8 an hour. this is the largest minimum wage pay increase in the nation. now, again, voters approved measure d in the fall. that's why the $2 increase is happening. this is of course happy news for the thousands of minimum wage workers in the city. but san jose's mayor is concerned that some businesses might not be able to handle the hike. he is worried people could lose their jobs. >> as the minimum wage goes up, small businesses in particular will make accommodations. some will absorb the cost, some will pass it on to their customers and some will have to decrease jobs and lay people off. >> a campaign is also kicking off today to encourage people to spend their extra money from those earnings in the city. the slogan is, earn and spend in san jose. it will be displayed in business windows. the minimum wage in california is $8 an hour. in san j

to spring forward tonight. >>> today the family of a san jose man found stabbed to death at an almaden park will gather to honor his life. 27-year-old errick wright was killed at guadalupe oak grove park wednesday afternoon. 27-year-old vincent gallegos was arrested with the murder. police say gallegos was at the scene when they arrived and he and the victim knew each other. he told investigators that he found wright bleeding in the park but his story didn't add up. the suspect was not able to explain why he had blood on himself. >> doesn't feel real right now. i just don't know what could have taken place where this guy to kill my brother like that. >> i want to know what my son could have been you know that could have been that detrimental to where he had to be brutally stabbed. >> police did find a knife at the scene. it is now at the crime lab undergoing tests to see if it is connected with the killing. >>> detectives are piecing together the bizarre murder of a 69-year-old man from san jose. stanley jacobson was found stabbed to death this week. his body was hidden beneath a pile of li

fast food restaurant at the shopping center. a san jose police officer that happened to be on a traffic stop a block away heard the crash and was the first responder out on the scene. the paramedics came out and declared the driver dead on the scene. police think they know who he is but are not releasing his name until they are able to notify the family. they think he is in his late 20s, early 30s. no obvious signs of drinking and driving but they won't be able to rule that out for sure until toxicology tests, not something the coroner would be performing. in the foregrounds, a white van pulling up. we believe that coroner is coming on the scene which means that maybe the scene will be cleared up sooner than initially thought. the eta was around 7:00. with the coroner coming on the skeep, it is quite possible it could be sooner. for more on your morning commute, i'm going to send it over to traffic anchor, mike inouye. mike? >>> as you saw, bob talked about the coroner potentially arriving on scene. that white van we just saw. that may be the issue. let's look at some

at the hp pavilion in san jose. this afternoon, a public viewing will be held in santa cruz. bob riddell is live in santa cruz where community support is strong this morning. good morning, bob. >> good morning. you can see the expression of support here on the front steps of the santa cruz police department where people continue to leave flowers and candles and plants. it is our understanding that the plants will eventually be planted in a permanent memorial garden in honor of the two officers. you can see the support and the amount of donations collected for the officers' families. the police department has received $45,000. local businesses have pledged another $125,000. you can log onto the city of santa cruz.com website to help the families of sergeant lauren butch baker and officer elizabeth butler. both were shot and killed last week by a man named jeremy goulet as he was investigated for a possible sex crime. he was shot and killed by law enforcement a short time later. ocean street. then the caskets will be taken to the hp pavilion in san jose for tomorrow's memorial service. two

to san jose. we are in san grows -- we start with claudine in santa cruz. >> reporter: we are standing at the start of the procession. the folks told to gather here starting about seven this morning and in the last several minutes we have seen activity. take a look to the side of me. you can see three buses that are lined up along this street. they have the santa cruz police emblem on them and a sign. we assume possibly members of the department will ride these buses down the procession. i want to show you what's happening in this parking lot just near the boardwalk here. you can see motor officers starting to line up their motorcycles. they will stage there and then move to the start of the procession. this procession, ready to leave about 8:45 but everybody was told to gather about seven this morning so it'll just get busier. the morning has started in this community. everybody is still trying to dumb to terms with the loss of the two officers. there was a memorial last night at the santa cruz memorial funeral home. just a chance for people, friends, family, strangers to come. there

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live in the south bay and he has more details on the upcoming removal. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. if you're not familiar with this area, we're on spring street. this homeless campground occupies a large swath of city owned land on spring street. it started last year with a couple tents and then in january its population exploded when another encampment was shut down and people migrated here. today about 100 people live here in tents scattered throughout. the city has given residents notice to leave today they're going to force them out. the city's point man on homeless camps tells us they'll clean up this area around 9:00 this morning. nonprofits have reportedly been out here to meet with these people to let them know about temporary housing solutions. the city and people who work around here want t

measure "d" back in november. that measure boosts minimum wage in san jose to $10 an hour. it is fairly obvious this raise is significant for the employees it is going to affect. the extra $2 an hour, when you do the math for a regular 40-hour workweek equals $32 more a month times 12 and that's an extra $3,840 a year. some local businesses in san jose have been paying that for some time now. the pizza shop owner says it does wonder for morale. >> the first thing you see is happy employees. an extra buck in their pockets per hour, it makes a difference. most these guys are in school and they can use a little bit of extra money. >> so how could this be a bad thing? other downtown business owners we talked to say the raise is going to lead to job cuts, fewer benefits and worst case scenario, a shuttered storefront. >>er hoo is something to think about. all but one of the eight states that have raised their minimum have seen falling unemployment rates. >>> let's check the forecast with meteorologist, christina loren. >>> you can save money on your pg&e bill as mother nature is going to rem

in san jose where police are on the scene of a fatal shooting involving a man in a stolen car. police say the man sped away from officers in unmarked police cars and the chase ended in unincorporated east san jose when the man put the car in reverse and sped toward an officer standing outside his car. they say the officer fired a slot and hit the suspect in the head. abc7 news reporter has an update in 30 minutes. >> we are learning new details of a child care center that was suddenly shut down by state regulators last friday. it involved the universal preschool formally known as the sunny side infant and preschool. state regulators found a number of violations including an infant sleeping in a high chair, a worker without a proper background check, more children than the school is licensed to care for and the improper restraining of children. photos were shown of the babies swaddled with a blanket tied around the body and another around their ankles. >> always been very nice until this happened and then it has been lie after lie when you try to get a refund and suddenly they say they onl
